3:00 - 3:20 ~ Giving a Global Voice to Perianaesthesia Nursing Practice
ICPAN’s recent research on the role and competence of the nurse working in the PACU showed that uncertainties exist regarding the education and competences required for nurses working in the PACU. Many countries lack formal education and do not recognize perianaesthesia nursing as a distinct specialty, while the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed concerning vulnerabilities for the nursing profession and global health system workforce. This session highlights ICPAN’s strategic initiatives for advancing standards of care and education for our specialty practice, while encouraging more Perianaesthesia Nurse involvement globally to give voice to the value of Nursing in safe surgery initiatives.

3:40 – 4:00 ~ What You Can’t See Can Hurt You
Waste Anesthesia Gases (WAG) can be an occupational hazard in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The source for immediate post-general anesthesia WAGs is the patient who exhales approximately >95% of unmetabolized gasses into the environment. Negative health effects from WAG exposure, environmental controls used to reduce WAG, and surveillance of air quality will be discussed. Operating theatre exposure control measures can be used in the PACU to promote the safety and wellbeing of perianaesthesia nurses.
