Hi, my name is Maria Kapritsou and I am a Chief Nurse in the PACU of Day Care Surgery “N. Kourkoulos” of “Saint Savvas” Oncological Hospital in Greece, where the operation of PACU has evolved the past decades. In Greece, perianesthesia nursing has been developed through the use of modern equipment to monitor and, generally, the high-technology environment, in combination with PACU patients’ high demands. We use complicated medications to achieve hemodynamic and respiratory stability of patients. PACU nurses, in Greece, as well worldwide, deal with airway management, advance cardiac support and complications commonly encountered in postoperative patients. In PACU, we evaluate postoperative nausea and vomiting and pain levels. Pain levels are being evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale. Of course, patients’ clinical assessment and physiological support are the major priority for PACU nurses. But, we have to mention that courses, which developed in Greek Universities and seminars that they are organized by Greek Perianesthesia Organizations, have led to the development of Perianesthesia Nursing, in Greece. In conclusion, primary responsibility of PACU Nurses is always the provision of optimal care to post anaesthesia patients. |
